National Fatherhood Initiative, "The Father Factor: Facts of Fatherhood." National Fatherhood Initiative. 1994. National Fatherhood Initiative™. 22 Mar 2009 http://www.fatherhood.org/father_factor.asp.

The National Fatherhood Initiative use the U.S. Census Bureau Report and many other sources that can easily be checked but seem to be very reliable and sound sources.
“The Father Factor: Facts of Fatherhood” has many different facts about all types of situations. It has the possible outcomes of every situation and the effects that each scenario could have in many different areas such as education, childhood obesity, drug and alcohol abuse, child abuse, teen pregnancy, the factors that a father figure could cause in crime, incarceration, maternal and infant health, and how poverty can affect how a father raises his children. There are facts such as a child in a fatherless home are five times more likely to be poor when they grow up, mortality rates for women that are unwed are almost 2 times higher for infants, they have significantly higher odds of being incarcerated, and that there is a significantly higher rate of drug use in children without a father figure. The one fact that stuck out the most for me or that kind of was most shocking to me was, “Of the 228 students studied, those from single-parent families reported higher rates of drinking and smoking as well as higher scores on delinquency and aggression tests when compared to boys from two-parent households.” I didn’t really think that only having one parent present in the home, not regarding if it were the mother of father, would have that much of an impact on a child’s life as then went into adult hood.
This site will be very helpful because it gives many different perspectives and many different situations that could occur. I also like that after each fact there is a source that I can check to see if it is a reliable source.
All of the sources are very reliable from what I gathered from each of them. There were sources after each of them facts and statistics that were used in the piece.

Magellan Health Services, "The Importance of Father Figures in a teen's life." 2009. Magellan Health Services, Inc. 22 Mar 2009 http://www.magellanassist.com/Mem/library/?TopicId=189&CategoryId=0&ArticleId=225.

The Magellan Health Services web site posts all of their sources and show where all of the information they used was gathered from. They are backed by groups such as Council on Accreditation (COA)/Employee Assistance Society of North America (EASNA), American Accreditation Health Care Commission/URAC, and National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).
In “The Importance of Father Figures in a Teen’s Life” many facts are presented. To start off with the major and most prevalent items were listed first: not having a father figure makes teens more vulnerable to mental or emotional problems, teen pregnancy, criminal behavior, and drug abuse. It mentions the differences among races, or if the father figure is around for part of the time or just completely absent all together. The article even mentions the fathers that are “there” all of the time but don’t exactly know how to emotionally “be there” for their child. There are facts such as “: fatherless children are up to 10 times more likely to be economically disadvantaged, twice as likely to drop out of school, more likely to commit crimes or to behave antisocially, and 2 to 3 times more likely to have emotional problems,” and that “According to one study, 80 percent of imprisoned criminals come from fatherless homes as do 82 percent of pregnant teens. Fatherless children are also at a significantly increased risk for drug abuse as teenagers. For example, girls without fathers are 40 percent more likely to abuse drugs.” There was mention that amount and level of involvement in a teen’s upbringing can effect the teen's mental well-being, perceptual abilities, and social skills. It was also present that those teens with more active fathers are more compassionate later in life.
This is helpful because it contains information on what could happen if a child doesn’t have a father figure and how it could possibly affect a child’s life. I feel it is reliable because many other sources are used that could easily be checked.
Based on what I saw when I checked the sources, I feel as if this is a reliable source that is pretty biased on the opinions of how important they feel a father figure is in a child’s life.

response on presentation

i feel like my presentation was prepared well and practiced but i didn't do so great on it. I think that i could have done much better on it then i actually did. I think that I just got nervous about the time limit and just lost everything from that point. Icould have also been more organized, my flash cards were out of order and had things written on the back so i had to fumble around while i was trying to present so it looked kind of sloppy and could have came off much better then it actually did.

"Back to Basics: Test Scores Don't Lie"

This piece was written 20 years ago, it is pretty much not relevent anymore. All of her research was up to date around the time it was written but today it is very out dated and almost useless. Her thesis was focused on 2 things: the United States performance in education on a global stage, and the difference of education and learning on a gender bias. She didn't have a counter argument present, in fact her argument was incomplete because of the lack of evidence that was present. She had ideas of how to change a few tests, such as the SAT and replacing it with test in specific studies that the student has been in.

Reflection on essay

Looking back on my diagnostic essay from last semester, and looking for the argument that was supposed to be present, I realized that I had no real argument. I had no real evidence in my essay. Everything was completely based on my opinion and were all pretty much just assumptions I had come to. I think that I had a definite thesis statement but not much more then that was in my essay. It was not a good argumentitive paper at all, it lacked the much needed evidence that would have made it an argument.

presention

I thought I was pretty much done with preparing my presentation but watching others go before I realized that I could make my own presentation much better. I have to go back over my notecards and take out many of the useless things that I had planned to include. I do not think that I have enough information from the anotated bibliography that I am presenting, most of what is in the bibliography is just stuff to take up space and the creditentials are much longer then the summary of the source itself.

preparing for exam exam.

To prepare for the essay exam I have read the book and thought about specific questions that my be asked on the exam. I have been discussing the book with other students. I started reading the book for a second time and started taking notes in all of the margins. I also read all of the other readings by Danticat that would further help me try to understand The Dew Breaker.
